Larry Jenkins, Assistant Director of Bands at Tennessee State University (TSU), is at the forefront of a groundbreaking musical program often referred to as “A Band of Firsts.” Under his leadership, TSU’s band has become the first HBCU band to perform at a presidential inauguration, on the White House lawn, and at the prestigious Midwest Clinic. In 2023, the band added another historic milestone, becoming the first to be nominated for both a GRAMMY® and NAACP Image® Award in the same year for their work on “The Urban Hymnal.”

“The Urban Hymnal” is a collaborative project between Jenkins and multi-disciplinary artist Sir the Baptist, blending TSU’s band sound with gospel and Black culture, from hymns to hip-hop. The project also benefited from the expertise of music producer Dallas Austin, who, alongside Sir the Baptist, worked closely with students through TSU’s Artist in Residency program, providing valuable insights into the music industry.
